Cardiology is the area of medicine which manages heart-related health issues. A cardiologist is an internist who elected to specialize in the study of the heart. Cardiologists receive specialized training during their residency and will often complete a "fellowship" after residency is completed. Cardiologists will often be asked to provide consultations on patient's and may monitor medications prescribed by a patient's primary care physician.
Cardiologists also perform diagnostic tests and interpret the results of those tests. An Echocardiogram, an EKG, and a treadmill-stress test are examples of diagnostic tests in which the cardiologist interprets the results.
Cardiologists are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with additional certification available in sub-specialized areas of cardiology.
