Obstetrics & Gynecology
This specialty focuses on the care and treatment of the female reproductive system, including well-woman screenings (e.g. ,PAP smear), surgeries (e.g. hysterectomies), prenatal care, birth, and postpartum care. Gynecological services also include counseling and treatment options for birth control, disease prevention, and fertility.
Vaccinations against HPV are obtained from the gynecologist for young women as young as 13 years of age. The gynecologist also counsels patients on the use of hormone replacement therapy for peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women.
With the advances in screenings for cervical and ovarian cancers, as well as recommendations for mammography, the obstetrician/gynecologist is a critical component of a woman’s long-term health.
An obstetrician/gynecologist provides care during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth.
Training includes nearly six years of clinical training after graduating from medical school. Board Certification is awarded by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
