Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis, management and non-surgical treatment of unusual or serious diseases. Internists are often the primary care physician for older patients who may have complex health concerns. Many internists are subspecialists, who limit their medical practice to problems of one organ system or to one particular area of medical knowledge. For example, gastroenterologists and cardiologists are internists who specialize in the study of the intestinal tract and the heart, respectively.
Board certification of Internists is conferred by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
